Calhoun Chronicle, 7 September 2000 - reprint from Feb 1894

LUCINDA TRIPPETT

On the 6 day of March 1894, Mrs. Lucinda Trippett passed away. She was the widow of Franklin Trippett, who died Feb. 9, 1886. She was buried by the side of her husband in the "Goodnight Burial Ground" on the morning of the 8th, in the presence of an unusually large assembly of people.

She was the daughter of Philip and Rebecca Low and was born near the village of Lowsville in Monongalia county on the 27th day of October 1814. She has five brothers and three sisters. So far as the writer knows, her sisters and three of her brothers are yet living. One brother died in 1861, and two, Harrison and Lemuel, went to California in the early days of the gold fever and never returned. Harrison was murdered by the Indians after the discovery of gold at Pikes Peak and the other has not been heard from for many years and the presumption is almost a certainty that he too has crossed the stream that washes the farther shore of time. Joshua and Gustavis, and the three sisters, Rebecca Watson and Elizabeth and Mary Barker, I believe are all living in Monongalia county. Levi emigrated to Colorado some 20 years ago. I have never heard of his death.

I do not know the respective ages of her brothers and sisters, but I believe Joshua was the oldest of the family, and had Mother Trippett lived until 27th of Oct., she would have been four score years upon life's rough road. I do not know the date of her christian birth, but it was before she was married on July 10, 1836. She was the mother of ten children, all save two who died in infancy are yet living. Philip and Milton are prominent citizens and prosperous farmers of Sheridan District in this county. Rev. Marshall, a zealous and eloquent minister of the M.E. Church South, lives about two miles below Grantsville. Rev. Caleb of the M.E. Church has been in the active ministry for 25 years. His work is now at Short Creek and Wheeling. Rev. Frank, M.D., of the same church, is in New York ministering to both soul and body, in scripture parlance: "Healing the sick and cleansing the leper." Lemuel H., her youngest son is well and favorably known as the present efficient county clerk of Calhoun county, a worthy successor of one, whom the late Judge Brown once said was the best clerk in the state. Mrs. Henrietta Miller of Smithville, her oldest daughter is an exemplary christian whose light ever shines before others. Mrs. Rebecca Smith, her youngest daughter, lives near the old homestead and to her and Milton all praise should be given for their filial affection and tender care of Mother Trippett who for the eight closing years of her earthly pilgrimage was totally blind and during all that time it was upon them she leaned and it was their pleasure to strew her path with flowers of kindness until she passed to a land that is fairer than this. (Larry Heffner)

Lucinda was buried on 8 Mar 1894.

Miss Susan Trover, Who, with the two children born of them, died a little
more than two years after the marriage. He then spent some time at Wheeling
and St. Louis, before coming to Calhoun county, where he married Miss
Henrietta Trippett, daughter of Franklin Trippett, who was born in
Monongallia county, on January 3, 1841, and then went to St. Louis; and in

Ophelia was a manger of The West Virginia Industrial Home for Girls.

The History of Education in West Virginia" at http://www.archive.org/stream/historyeducatio05educgoog/historyeducatio05educgoog_djvu.txt stated:

West Virginia Industrial Home for Girls

BY HILDA M. DUNQAN, SUPERINTENDENT

The West Virginia Industrial Home for Girls was established by an Act of the Legislature in 1897.

The first meeting of the Board of Directors was held in Clarksburg, July 28, 1897, to select a site. The members of the Board were Dr. Harriet B. Jones, of Wheeling; Mrs. N. R. C. Morrow, of Fairmont; Mrs. R. S. Gardner, of Clarksburg; Hon. John Cummins, of Wheeling; Hon. Stillwell Young, of Gaines, and Hon. J. Jerome Haddox, of Huntington.

The towns of Corinth, Buckhannon, Huntington, Bridgeport, Clarks- burg and Salem offered sites, and on September 2, 1897, the site offered by Salem was accepted. There were 33 acres to which ten more have been added.

The Home is beautifully located on two hills with a pretty ravine crossed by a bridge, and a grove of trees forming a background. It is fifteen miles from Clarksburg and one and a half miles from the Salem station, on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. There is a station at the gate of the institution, named Industrial, at which all accommodation trains stop. There is also a Postofflce of the same name. It has an abundance of excellent water; and, being situated in the gas region, gas Is used for heat and light.

The cottage plan was adopted by the Board and the Home now consists of two cottages and a school building with a chapel on the second floor. The first building, Jones Cottage, named after Dr. Harriet B. Jones, the founder of the "Home", was opened in April of 1899 with Miss Bliza- eth Clohan, of Wheeling, as superintendent; Mrs. Ophelia Trippett, of Preston County, as manager ,and Miss Mary Davis, of Harrison County, as housekeeper. The first girls came May the 5th, from which time there has never been room to accommodate all who have been committed.

The "Home" is in no sense a prison, but a place of instruction and cor- rection, giving the wayward girl the environment of a well-kept home where she is taught to be industrious and self-respecting, and is kept amid surroundings of refinement and Christian influences that must arouse some desire for a better, purer, nobler life.

Incorrigible girls, truants, beggars and those in such surroundings that they are in danger of falling into habits of immorality and vice, from eight to eighteen, may be committed to the care of the "Home" until they are twenty-one.

All girls do housework in the morning and attend the school of letters In the afternoon from 1:00 to 4:00.

As soon as a girl is thought to be capable of earning her own living, she is found employment and given a trial, usually in a good home; there are thirty-three out at present, doing for themselves; many have been placed in excellent Christian homes, where they are looked after morally, mentally and physically. No girl is allowed to leave the Home until every available effort is made to find out what kind of home the applicant offers.

Already we see results in the. moral, mental and physical improvement of those who have come under the beneficent influence of th« "Home". In the changed faces, deportment and language, one scarcely recognizes the girls who entered a few months ago. Is it not worth while to help to make good women, and give these girls a chance?

History of Ritchie County

The following is taken from the book "History of Ritchie County" written by Minnie Kendall Lowther,
and published in 1910.
Transcribed by Janet Waite and Earl Cowan.

CHAPTER LI
The Younger Men's Calender
Transcribed by Sylvia Cox.

Page 627

Okey E. Nutter - Of the long line of Ritchie county's Sheriffs, Okey E. Nutter enjoys the distinction
of being the youngest that has ever held the reins of this high office. But notwithstanding his youth,
his administration was characterized by an executive ability that has placed him in a front rank among
his predecessors, as well as among the Sheriffs of the state.

Mr. Nutter, like the other young men of this calendar, comes of hardy pioneer stock, and is a native
of White Oak this county. He was born on the one hundredth anniversary of the renowned battle of
Bunker's hill (June 17, 1875), and first made his appearance before the public, as a rural pedagogue.
In 1902, he was one of the three Republican candidates for the nomination for Circuit clerk, and was
only defeated by the narrow margin of six votes; and a remarkably complimentary feature of this contest
was that he received every vote, save one, in his home precinct.

In 1904, he was elected as Sheriff, and entered upon his official duties on January 1, 1905, with H.E.
Wass as deputy and Mrs. Nutter as his office assistant, and thus made a record for promptness and
efficiency in the collection and disbursement of taxes which is without parallel in the history of

Page 628

the county, the the present time. When he made his final settlement, he immediately turned over to his
successor the whole balance due the various county and district funds, which in all amounted to
twenty-eight thousand dollars.

The Tax Commissioner in speaking of Mr. Nutter's official record , says, that out of the fifty-five
Sheriffs of the state, none had a better record than he; and that from the standpoint of the
collecting of taxes and the returning of delinquents, his was the best of the entire fifty-five. Truly,
the "office shows the man," and no farther tribute need be paid to the character of the subject of this
sketch, than that shown by his public record.

At the expiration of his term in this office he purchased tha Lantz farm in Clay district and turned
farmer for a time, but he now resides at Pennsboro where he has prominent connection with the First
National Bank.

On August 15, 1898, he was married to Miss Addie Miller, daughter of the late John Miller, of Smithville,
who was at that time a teacher, and two bright little children, Darrell and Mabel are the result of this
happy union.

Children of Adaline M. "Adda, ada, or Addie" MILLER and Okey Eli NUTTER were:

i. Chauncey Darrell NUTTER
ii. Mabel NUTTER

Myrtle D. MILLER was born on June 28, 1880 in Ritchie County, West Virginia
