From the book "A 200TH ANNIVERSARY HISTORY OF NOBLESTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA (1796-1996)" by Robert G. Larimer, page 39,

Edward Jennings, an owner of several oil leases, is still remembered by some of the elder citizens of the area. One of his employees, William Shrum (Hazel Galloway's father), worked for Mr. Jennings at a time when the Presbyterian Church had some rough financial times. Whenever Mr. Shrum, an elder of the church, mentioned this to Mr. Jennings, he would often make a donation of $00 or $30, a substantial amount for those times.

From the book "A 200TH ANNIVERSARY HISTORY OF NOBLESTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA (1796-1996)" by Robert G. Larimer, page 54,

Hazel Galloway, life-long resident of Noblestown and in her 92nd year, recalls the meeting of her father, William Shrum, and her mother, Alice May Brockmyer . It seems William had invited May's sister to go on a date. When her sister got sick, May took her place. Not long after, Miss May Brockmyer became Mrs. William Shrum. (We do not know what the sister thought about that.) Both were faithful members at the Presbyterian Church. William also served as elder and May taught the women's Bible class.

Reverend Calvin, a long lanky man with a high starched collar, was called as pastor of the Presbyterian Church in 1912. It was his custom to conclude a pastoral visit with a prayer, a long one for which he and the family kneeled. One day he called at the Shrum home at the top of Noble Street. After he started his prayer, a young Ralph Roy yelled loudly for his friend, Frank Shrum, to come out and catch his pig, which had gotten loose. Reverend Calvin prayed, Ralph yelled, but no one moved a muscle until the "Amen".
