IN MEMORIAM

On Sunday last Mrs. Thompson, wife of Joseph Thompson, of Clarksburg, was translated from the earth to heaven. Morn for her not as dead, for to live in the hearts we leave behind us, is not to die. Her life was a most exemplary one and filled with good and noble deeds. Her character was adorned with every Christian and womanly grace and she tarried here but to love and minister to the comforts of those around her. God in his mercy shield and succor the bowed heads and bereaved hearts of the loved ones that linger behind, and give them beauty for ashes, the veil of joy for mourning, and the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness.

The Fairmount Index on Sept. 23, 1876 reported:

A Brave West Virginian Dies Fighting the Sioux

The family of Mr. W. Brockmire formerly of Palatine, this county, received two letters on Monday evening last. One from Col. Moore, 6th U. S. Infantry and the other from W. A. Burleigh, Clerk of the Steamer Far West. Each containing the particulars of an engagement with the Sioux near the mouth of Powder River, Dakota Territory, in which Mr. Brockmire lost his life under the following circumstances.

The Steamer Far West was employed to carry supplies to Gen. Terry's army operating against the hostile Sioux on the Big Horn River. And when near the mouth of Powder River it was found that the boat was too heavily laden and a part of the cargo was unloaded and the steamer proceeded on her way. Upon returning for the supplies it was found they had been destroyed by Indians who occupied the banks of the river in force and made threatening demonstrations toward the boat. A few shells from a twelve pounder on board dispersed them however. Col. Moore, who with three companies of infantry, was on board the boat, called for three volunteers - scouts to reconnoiter their position and determine their strength.

Mr. Brockmire and two others responded to the call and immediately left the steamer. But before they had proceeded far they were attacked by a large force of Indians and started as fast as possible to the boat. Six Indians endeavored by circling them to cut off their retreat and Mr. Brockmire's horse was soon shot and fell breaking his gun. He had been shot through the arm previously and disabled. And while attempting to rise, a Sioux rode up to him and shot him through the stomach. The discharge of the Indian's gun caused the scouts to turn and see the Indian dismount in the act of scalping the wounded man. They both fired on him at once and he fell pierced by two balls. They then returned, scalped the Indian and brought Mr. Brockmire on board the boat. He died the same evening of the occurrence and was buried at the mouth of the Powder River.

Mr. Brockmire was the son of Samuel Brockmire of Palatine and was well and favorably known in that community. He was employed as a volunteer scout under Gen. Terry's command and his officers speak in complimentary terms of his brave conduct and gentlemanly deportment while in the service. His relatives and friends have our sincere sympathy in their great affliction.

Biography of Marcellus M. Thompson:

(From Clarksburg Newspaper)
February 8, 1895
Marcellus M. Thompson

Marcellus M. Thompson, who for the past eleven years, except one, has held the office of Recorder and
Chairman of the Finance Committee of the Town of Clarksburg, and for a number of years has represented
it as attorney, was born in this city March 10, 1859.

He was admitted to practice law in 1881, and was one of council who represented the Memorialists in the
Asylum Investigation of 1882.

Mr. Thompson is an excellent mathematician, as well as an able lawyer, and in 1884 was one of a number
of persons selected by Artemus Martin, A.M., Ph. D., member of the London Mathematical Society, to pay
a tribute of respect to the late Enoch Berry Seitz, who was a member of that society, and at the time
of his death occupied the chair of Mathematics in the University of Missouri.

For years Mr. Thompson has contributed regularly to prominent daily papers, and written for various
journals devoted to the science of mathematics.

In 1888 he was nominated for prosecuting attorney by the Democratic Convention, but was defeated at
the general election.

In 1889 he did the legal work in the revision, codification, and preparation of the Ordinances of this
city, and prepared an appendix thereto in 1894, which were printed and bound, and now contain the
municipal law of Clarksburg.

He is the author of the book entitled "A Magistrate' Manual, containing forms in Civil and Criminal
Proceedings under the Code of West Virginia," which first appeared in 1889, and a second and revised
edition thereof was printed in 1894, which is a valuable work.

Mr. Thompson's long continious service as Recorder has been characteric of all other business matters
with which he has been connected - that of entering into the work with spirit of progress, and sparing
no pains in the discharge of every duty. As a lawyer he has been very successful and has a large
patronage. As a business man his ability is as readily recognized and appreciated.

Mr. Thompson turned over the office of Recorder to his successor, W. B. Osborn, in first class order,
and his settlements were correct and in every way satisfactory, which speak in loudest terms his ability
and correctness as an official.

From the book "A 200TH ANNIVERSARY HISTORY OF NOBLESTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA (1796-1996)" by Robert G. Larimer, page 39,

Edward Jennings, an owner of several oil leases, is still remembered by some of the elder citizens of the area. One of his employees, William Shrum (Hazel Galloway's father), worked for Mr. Jennings at a time when the Presbyterian Church had some rough financial times. Whenever Mr. Shrum, an elder of the church, mentioned this to Mr. Jennings, he would often make a donation of $50 or $30, a substantial amount for those times.

From the book "A 200TH ANNIVERSARY HISTORY OF NOBLESTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA (1796-1996)" by Robert G. Larimer, page 54,

Hazel Galloway, life-long resident of Noblestown and in her 92nd year, recalls the meeting of her father, William Shrum, and her mother, Alice May Brockmyer . It seems William had invited May's sister to go on a date. When her sister got sick, May took her place. Not long after, Miss May Brockmyer became Mrs. William Shrum. (We do not know what the sister thought about that.) Both were faithful members at the Presbyterian Church. William also served as elder and May taught the women's Bible class.

John James shipped aboard a vessel taking horses to South Africa during the Boer War from Oct 11 1898 to May 31 1902. He arrived in South Africa after the conflict was over.

He wrote this letter during his voyage to Bertha Brockmyer.

John James was sent to study Electrical Engineering at Holy Ghost College (now Duquesne), but did not complete his education.

John James and his family have lived in Cherry Valley in 1910, and lived in Midway in 1911 or 1912 in two different houses. He then moved to St. Mary's in late spring of 1913. He worked in the oil refinery while at Saint Mary's. His children Peg and Jack contacted polio during this time. He probably cursed the day he moved to St. Mary's, West Virginia because of the polio. Besides they did not sell whiskey. Anyway part of his job required him to stack barrels of oil by hand. He stated they weighed over 500 lbs.

Once someone (probably one of his kid that wrote a note) saw him pick up the mattress with Peg on it and carry it down the hall to another bedroom and put it on the bed. Some feat for a man with an artificial leg.

John James then returned to McDonald, Pennsylvania in the Fall of 1915.

John James BROCKMYER and Sarah Elizabeth "Bessie" RUSSELL were married on 11 Oct 1904 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Pennsylvania. They were married in the Methodist Bookrooms on Fifth and Penn.

"Christians recognize with all persons the inevitablility of death. The central doctrine of the Christian faith is the resurrection. Christians affirm their common faith in their attitude toward death and in their witness during the approach and experience of death. The reality of death, with all of its attendant sorrow and sense of loss, must be anticipated for us all, and there must be created the kind of health of mind and spirit that allows Christians to live their faith in this critical area of human existance. Christians should seek to make the occasion of death a time in which they reaffirm with joy the hope of the gospel."
