Despondent Over Love Affairs the Cause - Two Homes Saddened by Rash Act - Dies in Short Time

Death in its most hideous form has again invaded the home of a Van Wert family, the victim being Richard E. Feigert, who took his own life about 6:45 o'clock last evening by drinking a quantity of carbolic acid and firing a shot from a 32-calibre Ivor-Smith revolver into his head. The suicide was committed in the door yard of the Angevine home, 308 North Wall street.

Mr. Feigert, who had been employed as a salesman at the shoe store of Leeson & Stanley, left there at his usual time for starting for home, after bidding his associate salesmen, Ora Friesner and Cash Deniston, good-night. He went west on Main street, meeting Miss Eva Angevine, with whom he had been keeping company for two years, who is employed in the office of Dr. R. J. Morgan, and walked home with her. Arriving at the Angevine home, the young couple walked around the north side of the house and engaged in conversation for about half an hour, when Miss Angevine went into the house and Feigert turned to leave. A few moments later, and shortly after Miss Angevine had taken off her wraps, the family was startled by the report of a pistol. Mrs. Anglvine and one of the daughters went to the front door, at the west end of the house, and saw yung Feigert lying just off the porch step, grasping in his left hand a four-ounce vial and in his right hand a smoking revolver. Mr. Angevine was, at the time the shot was fired, at the pump in the rear of the house, getting a drink of water. Hearing the screams of the women he walked around the north wing of the house, where he came upon Feigert apparently in the death agony. He hastened to the telephone to summon assistance. About the same time Carl Brown, F. V. Wilson and Fred Spayd, who were at the C. N. freight office just across the street and had the pistol shot, reached the scene of the tragedy. A few moments later Policeman Harry hay and Dr. C. A. Files arrived. Feigert was still living, and he was borne into the Angevine home and laid on a couch. Then came Dr. Flemming, County Coroner, and Dr. R. J. Morgan. An examination showed the Feigert had drank a sufficient quantity of carbolic acid to produce death, as the interior of his mouth, throat and nostils were corroded. The shot entered at the mastoid, or at the base of the right ear, ranging upward and forward and penetratating the brain - a death wound in itself - and death came at 8:05.

The father, Mr. John Feigert, of 328 Gordon avenue; sister, Miss Orah, and brother, Louie, Feigert, were present as the young life of the son and brother ebbed away, but the mother of the unfortunate young man was prostrated by the terrible deed, and was unable to go to the death scene of her son. Coroner Flemming gave permission for the removal of the body to the home of his parents, and it was taken there by Undertaker Vore at nine o'clock. An inquest will be held this forenoon.

There seems to have been no other motive for the commission of the deed than that of lovers' jealousies and quarrels, although it is stated that Mis Angevine sought to break her relations with Feigert. It is also said by some of Feigert's acquaintances that he said he would kill himself if Miss Angevine refused to become his wife. These circumstances may have created the motive for the act, and the misunderstanding of last night but precipitated the unhappy crisis.

The young man bore an excellent reputation, stood well with his employers in whose service he had been for a period of more than four years, and was popular among his acquaintances, and was possessed of no bad habits. Miss Angevine, too, bears a good reputation, and has bee for nine years employed by Dr. R. J. Morgan in his office.

Richard Emanuel Feigert was twenty-one years old last August, and was born in Harrison township. A sorrowing father, mother, brother and sister survive to mourn for the untimely and tragic death of a son and brother.

The revolver that was used was bought at Kauke & Alspach's hardwar store about two weeks ago. The carbolic acid was bought of E. L. Mercer at Webster Bros'. yesterday noon.

Feigert's overcoat, hat and neck scarf were taken to the office of Coroner Flemming by a representative of The Times. In the pockets of the overcoar was found ten 32-calibre-short cartridges and an ounce of powdered opium which, from the paper in which it was wrapped, mast have been carried for some length of time.

Feigert held a life insurance policy for $1,000.00 in the Equitable Life of New York.

Miss Angevine was prostrated because of the deed, and required the services of a physicion during the greater part of the night.

Willshire Herald, dated March 23, 1905 reported:

Richard E. Feigert, of Van Wert, Crazed by Love's False Dream, Takes Carbolic and Shoot Himself

There was considerable of a sensation in Van Wert about seven o'clock last Friday evening when it was learned that young Dick Feigert had killed himself at the home of Miss Eva Augevine, his sweetheart. It is said that after a courtship of over two years, Feigert was jilted by Miss Augevine. Feigert was only twenty-one years of age, and leaves to mourn for his rash action a father, mother, brother and sister.

About Aug. 1, she began to suffer from placenta previa, which, however, did not grow serious until Saturday night, August 30, when the took worse. All that physicians could do seemed of no avail, and she grew weaker as the morning hours grew near, giving birth to a baby boy which had already preceded the mother to the Great Beyond, and ws at 5 o'clock, just as dawn of day, she crossed the chasm between here and there.

She will be missed from home and church and her place will be vacant, for Sarah is not here but gone on.

But let us not grieve, as those that have no hope for our beloved one has gone home and her good-bye was only a farewell till we meet again.

May God bless her life and death to those who remain. She leaves to mourn her departure husband, father, mother, brother, Carl, and sister Anna, besides many relatives and friends.

"Sarah had gone to be with Jesus
All her toils on earth are o'er,
Gladly would we have retained her
Had the Lord saw that was best,
But we bow submissive to Him
And rejoice that she is at rest
For she left such blest assurance
That her soul was washed from sin.
Sarah left this world of sorrow
  Those pearly gates to enter.
Her request was to her loved ones
That for Heaven they should prepare
So that when death overtakes them
They may meet her over there"

Edwin Feigert, oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Feigert, was born in Harrison Township, Van Wert County, O., on Oct 1, 1888. Edwin enjoyed good health until about two weeks ago when he took sick with grippe fever, which at first did not seem serious; all that physicians could do seemed of no avail and finally about a week before his death he was attacked by appendicitis. The severity of the last mentioned disease made it necessary for an operation; so on Friday, May , he was removed to the Van Wert County Hospital. The operation gave no relief, as it was found too late; he gradually grew weaker until death relieved his sufferings at 10:30 o'clock Monday evening, May 4, bringing his earthly pilgrimage to 25 years 7 months and 3 days.

He leaves to mourn his departure a loving wife, daughter, Alice Virginia, father and mother, sister Florence and brothers, Albert and Oscar, besides many relatives and friends.

He has gone from his dear ones, his child, his wife,

To take from us this loved one in the best of his days.
