Edgar Young, 80; U-Md. Animal Science Professor

Sunday, April 20, 2008

Edgar P. Young, 80, a University of Maryland animal science professor emeritus and a specialist in swine research, died March 26 at Riderwood Village retirement community in Silver Spring. He had Parkinson's disease.

Dr. Young joined the U-Md. faculty in 1958 and chaired the animal science department from 1968 to 1982. As chairman, he added programs in horse management and animal behavior and expanded farm and research facilities.

He played an instrumental role in the university's research efforts with the Wye Angus Herd, a long-term genetic study of a self-contained herd of beef cattle on Wye Island, conducted by the university since 1954.

Before retiring in 1990, Dr. Young developed and taught interdepartmental agriculture science courses; broadened his department's focus to include Maryland and world agriculture; and created cooperative research efforts with the U.S. Department of Agriculture as well as Johns Hopkins University. For many years, he worked closely with the Maryland Cooperative Extension service, providing assistance to the state's farmers.

Early in his career, Dr. Young wrote several important papers on the reproductive endocrinology and physiology of the pig. He also did noted research on the influence of diet on cholesterol and heart disease in farm animals; on the role of cellulose in animal nutrition; and on the influence of carbohydrates, protein and hormones in animal growth. He published more than 100 research articles in his field.

Dr. Young's proudest achievement, his son said, was mentoring more than 1,000 students who went on to careers as animal scientists, veterinarians, international aid workers and farmers.

"Ed Young was very much a quiet but near-perfect model leader," said Roger Garrett, a former official with the U.S. Agriculture Department. "He was very reluctant to take the credit he deserved. He made important contributions to many people's lives, who in turn helped others."

Edgar Paul Young was born on his family's farm in Van Wert County, Ohio, and was a member of Future Farmers of America. He did Army intelligence work during the Korean War.

At Ohio State University in the 1950s, he received bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in animal science.

He was a former president and director of the American Society of Animal Science's Northeast section. He was a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

His honors included U-Md.'s Regents Award in 1963 for excellence in teaching. As an emeritus professor, Dr. Young maintained an office at the university until his death.

A former Adelphi resident, he later lived in Stevensville, on Kent Island, for 15 years. He moved to Riderwood Village in 2006.

Dr. Young sang for nearly 50 years in the choir of Christ Congregational Church in Silver Spring, where he was a member and served on boards and committees.

His first wife, Margaret Stanton Young, died in 1977.

Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Dueece Newsom "Dewie" Young of Riderwood Village; a son from his first marriage, David Young of Falls Church; three stepchildren, Kevin Newsom of Chicago, Heather Anthony of Goldsboro, N.C., and Nyna Werner of Columbia; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
